CONJUNCTION
A conjunction is a part of speech that links two words, sentences, phrases or clauses.
I like pizza, but I know it is not a healthy food.
He is rich yet a miser.
CONJUNCTIONS ARE OF THREE TYPES:
1. Coordinating conjunctions 2. Subordination conjunctions 3. Correlative conjunctions
1. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS:
These conjunctions act as coordinators between two sentences or words that are grammatically equal.
They may be single words, phrases, or clauses. The examples of coordinating are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
They always come between the word or phrase.
Example:
He is a nice boy because he helps the needy.
I like chocolates and ice- creams.
It is neither sweet nor salty.
I like this but I know it’s not healthy.
You’ll have this or that?
He steals yet he is honest.
I didn’t like it, so I refused it.
2. SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION:
Subordinating conjunctions joins the independent clause to the subordinate sentence or clause. The dependent
clause usually is conjoined before the main clause and sometimes after it. Thus, there are two possibilities.
Example:
He drove although the visibility was zero.
Although the visibility was zero, he drove.
The examples of subordinating conjunctions
A- After, although, as, as if, as long as, as much as, as soon as, as though.
B- Because, before, by the time
E- Even if, even though,
I- If, in order that, in case.
O- Once, only if
P- Provided that
S- Since, so that
T- Then, that, though, till
U- Unless, until
w- when, whenever, where, wherever, while
3. CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTION:
Corrective Conjunctions are words that are used in grouped pairs. There are six pairs of correlatives Conjunction as given below:
Example:
- either….or
- not only….but also
- neither….nor
- both….and
- whether….or
- just as….so
Either you drive the car or go to college by auto.
Sham has to not only do this but also that.
I neither like chocolate nor ice-cream.
You both have to do this and that.
